The Expendables To Top This Weekend’s Box Office

August 14, 2010

Things would be clean cut on who will top this weekend’s box office as three highly anticipated movies are set to debut this week. It will be hard on who will actually reign supreme after last week’s result when the action comedy film The Other Guys toppled Inception on the number spot. The buddy-cop movie starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg toppled the three-time champion sci-fi film directed by Christopher Nolan and starred Leonardo Dicaprio.

But The Other Guys will face stiff competition with new releases. And early predictions had it that it will not hold on to the top spot for another week. Debuting on first place is The Expendables with $32.3 million. Despite having an R rating and mixed reviews, the action flick will have a strong opening because, not only will it attract a large male audience but also the female population as well. It also boasts an all star cast of action stars of various decades like Sylvester Stallone (Rocky, Rambo), Bruce Willis (Die Hard), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator), Jet Li (Romeo Must Die, Hero), Jason Statham (The Transporter), Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV, Masters of the Universe), Terry Crews (Terminator Salvation), and Mickey Rourke (Sin City, The Wrestler). With all those stars in one film, it is a fitting tribute to old school action films which the movie promises to offer. It is also written and directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Opening on second place is Eat Pray Love which stars Julia Roberts as American author Elizabeth Gilbert. It is based on the 2006 best selling memoir by Gilbert, which Oprah spent two episodes of her show on the book. It will reportedly rake in $24.5 million. It is less than this year’s Valentine’s Day but slightly higher than her 2009 film Duplicity. The chick flick suffers because it only has a limited specific audience, females aged 25 and older. This is the first since her Oscar-winning movie Erin Brockovich in 2000 that she has appeared in almost every scene of the film.

Last week’s champ The Other Guy will slide down to the third spot with $18.3 million. And rounding up the top four is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which is based on the comic book series Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O’Malley. It will premiere over the weekend with $17.6 million. Michael Cera of the Arrested Development and Juno fame will play the title role. He is a band member who has to fight the seven evil exes of the girl of his dream in order to keep on dating her.

Catch all these movies in theaters near you. Or you can watch The Expendables online and right at the comfort of your home.
