Warner Bros. Goes After Harry Popper Condom Maker

August 21, 2010

Warner Bros. is suing the company, Magic X, for copyright infringement. Magic X is the Swiss manufacturer of the Harry Popper condoms. Their packaging shows an image of a bespectacled condom waving a wand.

The studio is trying to ban the company from using the name and stop the manufacturing of the condom. A rep from Warner Bros. said, “The image of my client is in danger. This is clearly a reference to the film and fictional Harry Potter. Everyone who sees the condoms automatically thinks of Harry Potter.” The image closely resembles the much-loved character Harry Potter. The boy wizard is the lead character of the series written by British author J. K. Rowling. The novels have been adapted in the big screen and now considered as the most successful movie series of all time with over $5.4 billion at the worldwide box office. The franchise is estimated to be worth more than $25 billion. English actor Daniel Radcliffe plays the character on the film franchise. Part I of the seventh installment of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will hit theaters later this fall, while the second half is slated to be released July next year.

But a lawyer of the condom manufacturer disputed such claims by the studio behind the Harry Potter series and said, “Our product has nothing to do with Harry Potter.” The product was launched back in 2006 and the name is registered with the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property. It proved to be a huge hit. Warner Bros. has successfully stopped the manufacturing the Harry Popper condoms in some countries like Austria and Germany. The Cantonal Court in Schwyz, Switzerland is expected to give its ruling on the plight of the brand in the next few weeks.

The fantasy adventure movie will be shown on November 19, 2010. You can also watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows online.

Radcliffe Got Emotional on Last Day of Harry Potter

August 20, 2010

Playing Harry Potter pushed Daniel Radcliffe into superstardom; from a relatively known young British actor to an A-list star. He was only 11 years old when he first portrayed the lead character in the series. Author J. K. Rowling was very satisfied when director Christopher Columbus picked him to play Potter. He together with Emma Watson are the two highest paid actors in Hollywood today.

And after about a decade, Radcliffe, 21, has to say goodbye to the character which made him be loved by millions of people around the world. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Movie is the final installment of the best selling series of books, but the novel has been split into two movies, wherein part I will be shown later this year, while the second half is scheduled to be released next July. And he recalled how hard it was during the set for their final shooting day last July 12. He said in an interview, “I don’t expect myself to get emotional, but I really did, as I’m sure you’ll see on the DVD extras, because we were filmed weeping like children.”

He never thought that he would get schmaltzy during the last day but when producers David Heyman and David Barron came to him that was the time when he got s a bit soppy. He revealed, “They came up and said, ‘How are you feeling? How are you doing?’ And I couldn’t find any words, and I just said, ‘I just want you to know, I’ve had really a nice time.’ And it was such a young quite innocent, sweet thing to say, that I kind caught myself off guard. That was the moment when I suddenly had a lump in my throat and was like, ‘OK, I’m really going to have to struggle to keep it together on the last shot’ which was a stunt, very simple, just jumping and rolling onto the mop.” He was not able to stay and go with rest of the cast and crew when they went out after the last scene was finished because he flew off to New York to attend the Tony Awards.

The movie will hit theaters on November 19, 2010, but you can also Watch Harry Potter 7 Movie Online Free.

Rowling.  The EW released some details regarding what scenes will be included in the first part of the movie.

The magazine revealed, “Part I, by the way, will end at about Chapter 24 of the book, with Voldemort gaining possession of the Elder Wand, one of the three Deathly Hallows that allow the bearer to conquer death.” There has been so much buzz and some chose either the final scene will be the dramatic return of Ron Weasley or when the Snatchers captured Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron and took them to Draco Malfoy.

The first part is about the trio going on a dangerous journey after they decided not to return to Hogwarts to search and destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes. The Expendables To Top This Weekend’s Box Office

August 14, 2010

Things would be clean cut on who will top this weekend’s box office as three highly anticipated movies are set to debut this week. It will be hard on who will actually reign supreme after last week’s result when the action comedy film The Other Guys toppled Inception on the number spot. The buddy-cop movie starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg toppled the three-time champion sci-fi film directed by Christopher Nolan and starred Leonardo Dicaprio.

But The Other Guys will face stiff competition with new releases. And early predictions had it that it will not hold on to the top spot for another week. Debuting on first place is The Expendables with $32.3 million. Despite having an R rating and mixed reviews, the action flick will have a strong opening because, not only will it attract a large male audience but also the female population as well. It also boasts an all star cast of action stars of various decades like Sylvester Stallone (Rocky, Rambo), Bruce Willis (Die Hard), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator), Jet Li (Romeo Must Die, Hero), Jason Statham (The Transporter), Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV, Masters of the Universe), Terry Crews (Terminator Salvation), and Mickey Rourke (Sin City, The Wrestler). With all those stars in one film, it is a fitting tribute to old school action films which the movie promises to offer. It is also written and directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Opening on second place is Eat Pray Love which stars Julia Roberts as American author Elizabeth Gilbert. It is based on the 2006 best selling memoir by Gilbert, which Oprah spent two episodes of her show on the book. It will reportedly rake in $24.5 million. It is less than this year’s Valentine’s Day but slightly higher than her 2009 film Duplicity. The chick flick suffers because it only has a limited specific audience, females aged 25 and older. This is the first since her Oscar-winning movie Erin Brockovich in 2000 that she has appeared in almost every scene of the film.

Last week’s champ The Other Guy will slide down to the third spot with $18.3 million. And rounding up the top four is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which is based on the comic book series Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O’Malley. It will premiere over the weekend with $17.6 million. Michael Cera of the Arrested Development and Juno fame will play the title role. He is a band member who has to fight the seven evil exes of the girl of his dream in order to keep on dating her.

Catch all these movies in theaters near you. Or you can watch The Expendables online and right at the comfort of your home.

Critic Reviews of The Expendables

August 13, 2010

Sylvester Stallone and his fellow action heroes of the past decades will be shooting their guns this week in theaters with The Expendables. The film has been getting a lot of buzz with its all star cast, which also includes Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, and Arnold Schwarzenegger found some time to leave his job as Governor of California to appear on this film. It is deemed as a return to the old-school movies of the 80s and early 90s.

The film promises that it will offer a nostalgia that has been put into shelves by the major studios after CGI effects and superhero movies rose to fame. But The Expendables is taking some slack by critics as early reviews have been released. In Rotten Tomatoes, the film has 43% rating at the Tomatometer based on 68 reviews counted, with 29 rated it Fresh and 39 Rotten, and has an average rating of 5.2 out of 10. In Metacritic, it was given mixed or average reviews with a Metascore of 40/100 based on 11 critics. These are just some of the reviews by critics:

The Hollywood Reporter (Sheri Linden): “The body count is high and the personalities click in this old-school testosterone fest.”

Entertainment Weekly (Owen Gleiberman): “The way that Stallone directs, though, every machete thrust and relentless round of bullet spray is staged with a certain undeniable… conviction… what’s distinctive - and backwardly fun - about The Expendables is that it’s completely low-tech, brute-force movie, a real meathead jamboree. There are no video-surveillance scenes, no computerized weaponry or digital gloss. The movie doesn’t have that stuff because Stallone doesn’t think that way.” Rating: B

Variety (Peter Debruge): “A hot mess – that’s what Sylvester Stallone and friends have wrought in The Expendables, a nearly incoherent all-stars-on-deck actioner that plays like Grown-Ups in nitro or a brutish, blue collar Ocean’s Eleven (which financially speaking, isn’t a bad place to be.) With no concept on the screenplay level, Stallone impressively assembles a never-before-seen tough-guy line-up the likes of which B-movies fans should feel compelled to witness firsthand. Though the muddled execution falls far short of the talent involved, the Lionsgate release is loud and explosive enough that sequels will follow.”

The Guardian (Phellim O’Neill): “See it with the rowdiest crowd possible. Sylvester Stallone’s action epic may draw on a hackeneyed plotline, but a film stuffed with heavy weight stars has goodwill and charm in abundance… It’s not particularly well-made, but the patchiness only adds to the considerable goodwill and charm of the movie carries.”

The action flick will be shown in cinemas this August 13, 2010. Or you can also watch The Expendables online.

Jet Li of The Expendables

August 12, 2010

The Expendables promises to be a kick ass movie as it stars some of the biggest names in the action flicks of the past, where they were huge explosions, a lot of hand to hand combat, and the heroes look like they could smash your face with just one blow. It pays homage to that long-forgotten era after high tech CGI effects took over that genre.

The all star cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. But of all the action heroes seen on the film, compared to the others, Jet Li has the smallest frame. But he is a skilled martial artist. He retired after he won several gold and silver medals for the Beijing Wushu Team to pursue a career in acting. His debut movie was the Shaolin Temple in 1982. The movie was successful that two sequels followed. He scored another hit with the Once Upon a Time in China series, that he starred in four out of the six films in the franchise as Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung. He went to Hollywood and played his first villain role in Lethal Weapon 4 opposite Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. His first starring film was the 2000 hit Romeo Must Die with the late Aaliyah. He then appeared in movies like The One and Kiss of the Dragon. In 2002, he was cast in the lead role of Zhang Yimou’s epic movie Hero, which was nominated for Best Foreign Language film at the Oscars. Jet Li and another martial arts legend Jackie Chan appeared for the first in the film The Forbidden Kingdom and proved to become a hit. He was next seen as the main villain in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Who Will Reign in this Weekend’s Box Office?

August 11, 2010

Who will top this weekend’s box-office? It is hard on who will reign supreme as three brand new highly-anticipated movies are scheduled to be released in theaters this week. The action heroes of the 1980s and 90s are set to make a comeback. America’s sweetheart will also return on the big screen. Plus, another comic book character will be brought out of the pages.

Sylvester Stallone and his ultra beefed up posse will be seen on the action thriller The Expendables. The movie seems like a throwback of the action flicks of the past decades with a lot hand to hand combat, huge explosions, and sexy women waiting to be saved by muscled up heroes. Almost all of the action stars are present including Stallone, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, and Stone Cold Steve Austin, with guest appearances from Die Hard star Bruce and the Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger. It looks like a fun film as the stars will surely give some funny one-liners. It will also be action-packed with real explosives as Stallone wanted to have as little CGI effects as possible. A true homage to old school action. Sad though that Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude van Damme, and Chuck Norris will not be seen in this film.

Julia Roberts will make a comeback in a film which she is known best, a romantic comedy. Eat, Pray, Love is the big screen adaptation of the best-selling memoir by American author Elizabeth Gilbert. In the film, Roberts plays the author who left everything to find inner happiness and contentment. She first traveled to Italy to please her taste buds (Eat). She then went to India to find spirituality (Pray). And her last trip took her to Bali, Indonesia where she found a man to satisfy her heart (Love). The movie also stars Academy Award winner Javier Bardem, James Franco, Billy Crudup, and Viola Davis, and Brad Pitt serves as one of the producers. Glee creator Ryan Murphy will direct this latest chick flick.

The geeks and fanboys are surely waiting for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. It is based on the comic series Scott Pilgrim by Scott Lee O’Malley. Geek posterboy Michael Cera will play the lead role Scott Pilgrim, a bass player of the band Sex Bob-omb. He meets the girl of his dreams, but in order to have her, he must first fight her seven evil exes. Cera is best known for playing George Michael Bluth on the sitcom Arrested Development. He also appeared in movies like Juno and Superbad.

All three movies will hit theaters this August 13, but you can also watch The Expendables online.

The Expendables: Terry Crews and Randy Couture

August 10, 2010

Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Mickey Rourke These are just some of the big names that will be seen in the action thriller The Expendables, which is bound to hit theaters in just a few days from now. It promises to pay homage and a throwback to old school action movies of the 1980s and early 90s. Most of the actors of The Expendables are some of the most prominent stars during that era. Some of the lesser known cast members include Terry Crews and Randy Couture.

Terry Crews is best known for his appearance on the Old Spice’s Odor Blocker Body Wash ad campaign. He is also famous for playing Chris Rock’s father Julius on the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris. He currently has his own reality show The Family Crews on BET and a brand new sitcom on TBS, Are We There Yet?, which was based on 2005 movie of the same name. His movie credits include Training Day, White Chicks, and Idiocracy. But before pursuing his acting career, he was once a football player. He was included in the 1991 NFL draft, and was in the football field for six seasons as defensive end and linebacker. He played for Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, and Washington Redskins.

Randy Couture is huge in the mixed martial arts circuit, and is known as The Natural and Captain America. His fighting styles include Catch and Greco-Roman wrestling. He holds a few records in the UFC history including being the only five-time championship title holder and has competed in 15 title fights. He is also one of the two fighters (the other is B.J. Penn) for having won two titles in two different divisions (heavyweight and light heavyweight). He is a UFC Hall of Famer and is one of the most famous mixed martial arts fighters. He has been seen in movies like The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior and Cradle 2 the Grave with Jet Li.

The action flick will be shown in theaters on August 13, 2010, but you moight also want to watch The Expendables online.

Stallone Back in Action

August 9, 2010

Sylvester Stallone became famous for being one of the action stars of the past who epitomized machismo and beefed up bodies like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Steven Seagal, and Jean-Claude van Damme, who reigned in the 1980s to early 90s. He is best known for playing the underdog boxer Rocky Balboa in the Rocky film franchise and as the troubled Vietnam War veteran John Rambo in the Rambo series. But as the 90s drew to a close, old school action movies were then pushed in the backseat and big budget, high tech films took over, and even forced some action stars to retire or run for politics. Stallone shidted to dramas like Cop Land and Shade and the family-friendly Antz and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.

And now Stallone is back in what he does best: heart-pumping, old school action in the upcoming film The Expendables.  In an interview, the 64-year old actor talked about getting back into making action movies and dissed on Academy winner Al Pacino and James Caemron’s Avatar. He said, “I tried Spy Kids. Doesn’t work.”  He then commented, “Action is a lot harder than drama. I’m waiting for Pacino to play Rambo.”

He also believed that old school action movies will make a comeback. He felt that the success of Avatar will never be topped ever, after the 3D sci-fi film became the highest grossing movie of all time. He said, “It’s a cycle. The same thing happened in 1968 and 69. At the time, the studios were going down big time. They were financing musicals… but all of a sudden Easy Rider (1969) came along and it changed everything. I think the bubble is just about to pop. After Avatar, everybody should just quit. They should. They should say, ‘That was brilliant. It’s done. Let’s go back to the little thing. You know, a guy on a horse, he gets punched in the face and has a fight in a barbershop.’ I think that’s going to happen. I really do.”

See Stallone back in action when the film hits theaters on August 13 but you can also watch The Expendables online.
